ON WRITING THE SONGS
“I wrote the intial beats and music in March 2020,
watching squirrels play up north during the state
shutdown. Becasue I work so much producing
other people’s music, and as well have many other
of my own musical endeavors, it took me years to
finally finish the album. Better late than never!”
-- Paul Kneevers
The sound of 5 In The Sky
Simple, yet at times complicated. Grrroovy beats,
with Keith Tippet-like piano stabs, organic modular
synth bits, Nile Rogers-esque guitar shreds
from local legend Shonn Hinton, and experimental
sax solos from the Saxsquatch and Aaron Gardner
are all lead with the low, sultry vocals emanating
from Paul Kneevers.

The smooth beats of Eric T. Olsen on drums and
Maurice “Buck” Harmon on bass guitar propel
the rhythm section forward, capturing an alluring
sensibility that reminds listeners of ‘70s grooves,
yet also captures the essence of current pop and
jazz music.
Biography
Paul Kneevers has a musical career spanning decades, genres, and skill sets. As a teen growing up in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1970s, he saved money from his paper route to buy his first Leslie speaker cabinet, which he still has, to accompany his Hammond organ. Not content with only one instrument, his musical training included piano, guitar, bass, opera vocals and trumpet.
Paul started playing out in clubs at the age of 14 which may sound overly precocious today. But for him, it was an opportunity to learn from older musicians. He was inspired by the creative complexities of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, King Crimson, as well as Jimmy Smith, Jan Hammer, and Stevie Wonder.
Some of Paul’s significant early playing includes the band Sense, a trio that earned notoriety early on for their original prog rock compositions. The band released a triangle-shaped record, which confounded the usual record store placement in bins so it ended up on countertop displays for greater visibly. It was novel and a clever stroke of marketing as well as musical inventiveness. This is now a rare and highly sought-after collectible record.
During the ‘80s and ‘90s Paul played in a variety of original rock bands and also started his career as a sound engineer for live and studio recordings. He bought his first recording studio in 1989. Unhappy with his corporate career, he had quit his job, sold his house, and bought the studio within the space of one month, a bold move. He has worked with an unknown number of bands and has thousands of album credits to his name in many different roles as a musician, engineer, and producer.
More recently, Paul’s music has focused on the bands Lovanova, Lupinare, and 5 In the Sky. Lovanova showcases his love of the Hammond organ and synthesizers, with music described as well-suited for ‘70s car chase scenes. Lupinare is the hard thrash/prog/rock outfit with Frank Zappa-inspired guitar, sharp social commentary and driving rhythms. 5 In The Sky comes from Paul’s jazz interests, and features his piano work as well as his smooth vocal style surrounded by electric guitar, modular synthesis, and saxophone.
Looking ahead, Paul continues to work in the studio as an engineer and producer, as well as a teacher to younger engineers learning the craft. His music continues with his current bands through recording and live shows, as well as building an online library of audio and video to share with audiences around the world.
